Do you have to empty a house before selling it in France?
Generally, yes. Unless the sale agreement (compromis) says otherwise in writing, the seller must hand over the property free of furniture and clutter by the signing of the final deed (acte authentique) at the notaire. Cellars, lofts, garages and outbuildings are included.
Otherwise, the buyer may ask for the clearance at your cost or delay taking the keys.
For information only, not legal advice.
When to book
- As soon as the compromis is signed
- At least 2 weeks before completion
- For a probate sale, on a date that suits all heirs
What we do
A full clearance, room by room
- You set aside what you keep; we remove the rest
- Furniture, appliances, boxes, cellar, loft, garage, garden shed
- We can also move what you keep to your new address
- We can work while you're away, with key handover
How much does it cost?
Like a clearance, it depends on volume, access and the type of items.
